Overt Security Labels
Overt security labels are designed with visible features that are evident to everyone but difficult to copy, especially if multiple security elements are used. Overt labels are meant to be easily recognizable, acting as a deterrent to counterfeiters and providing immediate assurance to consumers. The following are common and highly effective overt security elements found in many brand protection labels.

  • Holograms and Color-Shifting Inks: Holograms have unique optical properties that diffract light and create virtual three-dimensional effects that are impossible to copy. Holograms are a deterrent to counterfeiters because they require specialized equipment and technology to make. Color-Shifting Inks also create a unique optical effect by altering their hue when viewed from different angles, making them difficult to duplicate. This technology can be found on credit cards, currency, and identification cards.
  • Tamper-Evident Seals: Tamper-evident labels or seals are commonly found on medicine bottles or packaging for electronic equipment. These labels are designed to show visible signs of tampering when removed or altered, providing a clear indication of safety and authenticity.
  • QR Codes and Barcodes: Barcodes, found on most products, and in different forms, play a crucial role in brand security and authentication. More than a visual representation of product data, barcodes encode information in a machine-readable format and employ various encryption techniques. Quick Response (QR) Codes are 2-dimensional barcodes that can store a significant amount of data and often use error correction algorithms to ensure accurate decoding. Consumers can scan a QR code with a mobile device to link to a verification database, enabling them to quickly confirm the authenticity of a product. These unique data codes give each product a specific ID that companies may use to spot counterfeit goods.
  • Distinctive Patterns or Logos: Distinctive patterns and logos serve as immediate indicators of authenticity with embossed patterns and/or proprietary marks. These distinctive graphics are common overt elements that are difficult for counterfeiters to accurately replicate.

Covert Security Labels:
Unlike overt labels, covert security labels include security elements that are not readily visible to the naked eye. Covert labels are designed to be more discreet than overt labels and require specialized tools or knowledge for detection. This makes them effective in forensic analysis and in distinguishing genuine products from counterfeits in more controlled environments. Covert security features are highly recommended to deter counterfeiters because security elements that are not visible are very difficult to duplicate. These technologies provide additional layers of security against counterfeiting by making it harder for counterfeiters to identify and replicate them. Common and successful covert security elements used on many product labels include:

  • Microscopic Taggants: These are tiny particles or markers embedded in the label or product, invisible to the naked eye but detectable with specialized decoding equipment.
  • UV Fluorescent Inks: Inks that emit specific colors or patterns when exposed to ultraviolet light, revealing authenticity in controlled inspection environments.
  • Chemical Markers: Unique chemical signatures, or dyes that can be detected through chemical analysis, providing a forensic level of authenticity verification.
  • Embedded RFID Chips: Radio-frequency identification chips embedded within labels or products, allowing for instant verification when scanned with RFID readers.

Forensic Security Labels:
Forensic security labels offer the highest level of anti-counterfeit protection available at Weblor Solutions. These labels incorporate specialized security features that are detectable only by trained professionals or through advanced forensic techniques. Forensic technology provides in-depth product verification and tracing capabilities using covert or hidden features including:

  • Secure Sterilization
  • Microscopic Taggant
  • Chemical Tracers
  • Spectral Analysis
